The Final 10 Pound Struggle

Why is the last 10 pounds so hard? I had another food slip a few days ago and it’s been tough to get back on program. I guess it’s partly because I’m so happy with where I’m at and the progress I’ve made on Medifast. I’m getting tons of compliments and feel great. :) I’m not sure I really need to be a size 6 at my age. It comes right back to the outside world imposing their wishes on me.

Guess what? That still doesn’t work for me, but I also don’t want external pressure to undo me and take me backwards. So, back to what I want. I want to stay thin (keyword being “stay”) and I want to be a size 8. A size 6 would be great, but not if it’s too hard to maintain. I want to exercise, I want to be healthy and enjoy life!

So here we go again, one day at a time. I need to take the pressure off myself. For today I may even have to take it one meal at a time. I’d love to hear from you if you can relate to the final 10 pound struggle. We can all get there if we support each other.

Hi Genie,

I’ve left you a few responses to your previous entries. I know you meet more people than you can possibly count, but I want to tax you memory for a moment. I met you last December at your store with a friend of mine. We were the two gals who are from your grandpa’s hometown. I sent you some pillows of pictures I took of your store. Anyhow, if you can remember who I am or what I look like at all, you may recall that I am a petite woman — but I wasn’t always that way. As I got into my late 30’s I managed to pack on 25+ pounds!! Trying to lose those last 10 pounds WERE THE WORST!!! What worked for me was getting a specific motivation in mind and holding fast to it. At that time, my 20 year High School Reunion was approaching and I decided I wanted to look the best I possibly could for the event. Whenever I would let diet or exercise slip I just re-focused on my goal. It took awhile, and there were several slips along the way, but I managed to do it. It’s 2 years later now, and I’ve managed to keep it off. I am now in my 40’s and very mindful of my health - - THAT is now my motivation. I find my “natural weight” is about 5 pounds more than what I was struggling to be. A size 8 is still small, my friend. Nothing wrong with that if it comfortable on you. Anyhow, my advice to you for losing that final 10 is to mentally decide upon that one specific moment (much like the Emmys) where you can throw back the curtain and say “Hey World, look at me now!”

Be good to yourself…you’ll get there!

Sue:)

I’m right with you, Genie. I had a couple of slips but, it doesn’t have to mean the end of my commitment to weight loss. I’m down 29lbs and plan to keep going. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you on TV soon :-)

Dear Genie,
I’m not close to the final 10 pounds but I’ve been at that stage before and I know the frustration and stress it can be. As you can see, I’ve yo-yo’d my entire life. Don’t beat yourself up for being human and having a “slide” along your journey. You’ve told us to be kind with ourselves on our individual journey and I give those words back to you.
Something happened at the beginning of 2007 for me, I made a commitment that it was going to be MY year to focus on my health and getting this weight off once and for all. It doesn’t work until it clicks within you and you are finally ready to do it for yourself - anyone else telling it to you when you aren’t ready to hear it only sends you to the Haagen Daz or the chips or the peanut butter. ;-) You’ve made this commitment to yourself and you’ve been a success with it. There is nothing wrong with adjusting your plan with realistic goals that will allow you to maintain a svelte figure AND enjoy life. And, Honey, if you never lost another pound, you look FABULOUS!
I was thinking how great you look yesterday as I was drinking my Medifast chocolate shake, thumbing through Soap Opera digest because the ad was there with a photo reel of your progress pictures. It’s so good to see you beaming and happy! You can see it, Genie, in your smile and in your eyes.
But one thing I hope you will always remember as you struggle with that last 10 pounds: you are a beautiful woman! On your best day and your worst day, you are a beautiful woman. It comes from within and yours shines bright!

As always, I send you butterflies :-) Jhill

THINK POSITIVE AND READ THE SECRET. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN POSITIVE. THE BOOK HELPS AND WHAT YOU PUT OUT THERE YOU GET BACK. YOU ARE DOING SO GREAT AND DON’T KEEP SAYING WHAT YOU WANT TO OTHER PEOPLE. INWARDLY SAY IT . YOU SABOTAGE YOURSELF WHEN YOU TELL OTHERS. I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND WHO HAD GASTRIC BYPASS AND LOSING THE LAST 10 LBS. IS SO HARD BUT PEOPLE TELL HER ALL THE TIME SHE LOOKS GREAT AND NOT TO LOSE ANY MORE.IF YOU WILL FEEL BETTER AT 10 LBS LIGHTER THEN DO IT . LOVE VICKIE

Genie, I am struggling with the same lbs. also. I have 25 to go and seem to be loosing and gaining the same 2-5 lbs. for the past few months. It is very frustrating so I understand. I am not on a specific diet, just eating well and exercising. I know just what you are going thru.

Hi Genie,

I recently saw you this summer at a Lobster Pound in Lincolnville. I believe this was before your recent weight loss, and you looked wonderful. I am glad to see that you are not giving into outside pressures regarding what a woman “should” look like. Rather, you are trying to be healthy. That is a great example for your daughter.

I am a “robust” woman (my husband would say bodacious!) and feel that I am healthy and strong at my size … and that is what matters.Though I KNOW that I need to exercise more! My girlfriend says we often don’t need to change the way we look - just the way we see ourselves.

I hope that you are enjoying your healthier lifestyle. And I hope to run into you again in Lincolnville. Maybe this time I will say HI :) Although my 2-year said hello to you and you returned the greeting.

Stay Well,
Jodi

Hi Genie….you look great..Keep up the great job….I stuggle with my weight and you are giving me the incentive to start to do something about it….I was at your store in Belfast the beginning of August with a friend and was disappointed you were not there, I spent alot of time there and bought myself some treats….What a lovely lovely store, your staff was just wonderful — keep up the great work!! I hope to make it up there again and next time maybe even run into you. Thanks again Lin

Oh, Genie, I know about those ‘food slips’ as I found myself doing it last week. Of course, it wasn’t until halfway through the eating that I realized “Oh, and why am I doing this again?”.

You will always be beautiful, no matter what size you are. :0)

You look great right now how you are. You still look the same as you did when you first started GH. You were my favorite in the show and I still watch it hoping for your return. Hope up the good work and that wonderful glow you have about you.

Hi Genie! I’m about your age (I just turned 44), and have recently lost 10 pounds in the last 5 weeks. I’m 5′2″ and I started out at 138 and am now at 128. I’d like to lose another 10 pounds (or maybe even 15 but I think that may not be realisitic.) So basically I am down to my last 10 pounds, and I agree, they are always the hardest! For the last 10 pounds, I plan on losing no more than 1 pound per week.

It all depends on the brand, but at 128 I’m a comfortable size 8 in Lee jeans. At 118 I would be a comfortable size 6. Only make it your goal if you want to, but at “our age” (we’re not that old!), a size 6 is not unrealistic (especially with the “vanity sizing” of the last 20 years).

I’m doing it by just eating normal foods, but limited to 1400 calories a day. I give myself an extra 300 calories once a week on my weigh day. For exercise, my goal is to burn at least 325 calories 6 times per week. I am doing mostly The FIRM workouts. I alternate pure cardio workouts with cardio and weight workouts.

For motivation, I created an incentive system for myself. I give myself $100 per week towards a new wardrobe, but if I overeat or don’t exercise, then I have to give part of that money to charity instead (3 cents per calorie over.) So far my system has been working great for me. The financial incentive helps me to get right back on track after I overeat, so I don’t have to pay more! I track and write down my exercise and everything I eat.

Hope you are doing well and please keep us updated on your progress.

Hi Genie,

I agree that a size 6 would be very hard to maintain. I think a size 8 is perfect, congratulations!!!

I love this diet and I feel so encouraged by how quickly you were able to lose the weight you wanted to.

I’m still 10 pounds away from the final 10 pound struggle, but I think you’re right to take the pressure off yourself, enjoy your great accomplishment and take one meal at a time!

Thanks so much for introducing so many of us to Medifast and motivating us to succeed!

HI Genie-

Congrats!! I feel very inspired by what I have been reading. I want to begin Medifast and hope to have the same great results you have. You look great. Money is a bit tight, but I am going to figure out a way to be able to become a part of Medifast and be as successful as you.

Keep up the great job. I know it can be hard but you are doing it!!!

15 | Luci923 said:

I think you hit the nail on the head, Genie. What is a realistic goal to achieve. What is a size/weight that you will be able to maintain once you incorprate more regular meals into your diet. I think that last 10 is not so critical. But what is critical is that you and only you are satisfied with where you decide to stop. Get to a point where you are happy with yourself and then try to lose 2-3 pounds more before you transition because there’s bound to be some fluctuation then. My last and most successful attempt to lose weight, I never did make it all the way down to the number and size I expected myself to be. But, I have found a place where my body seems to be comfortable maintaining. A major change in my attitude was that this wasn’t a diet for me anymore. This is a lifestyle choice. I am someone who has to exercise. I’ve learned the hard way that if I don’t, I’ll start gaining. And I can’t mess around too much with sweets. And so it goes…3 years later and sometimes it’s still a day to day thing. Is my body perfect? Nope. But I am healthier in my eating and exercise habits at the age of 41 than I have ever been. And my girls are learning about healthy snacks and drinking water and being active. Genie, you are a beautiful, intelligent , strong woman. You can do anything you put your mind to doing. So hang tight, you’re almost there! If you want to lose that last 10-you will. If it’s just 8 and you’re happy-so be it. You’ve got it right-exercise, be healthy, and enjoy your life…you deserve nothing less!

Genie,

I sure can relate about those last 10 lbs. I actually have 12, but I seem to have come to a complete standstill. I wonder how much of it is mental? hehe. Keep strong, and who knows? One day soon we may wake up one morning and suddenly realize that we have reached our goals!

I am so glad to hear that you are happy with how you look. That is the most important thing.

Genie,

Congrats on your success so far…I’ve lost 22 pounds since July 4th, but had three slip ups. I’ve been doing great for the past two weeks, even surviving a big three day family get together. I’ve got 11 pounds to go and I am determined to do this.

Stick with it, the weight will come off. The last 10 pounds are the hardest, but you can do it! I’ve been enjoying logging on and following your success. You’ve been a big inspiration to a lot of people.

Just F.Y.I…my friend that got me into this, lost 28 lbs., she didn’t follow the 4 week maintenance phase to the letter, and has kept every pound off. So that’s extremely encouraging…and keeps me going! Best Wishes.

Hi Genie -
I’m having a hard time today and I’m trying to give myself a break without letting myself indulge in food or a few glasses of wine or whatever it is I think will help me get through frustrating moments. I am finding out - slowly, that this process doesn’t have to be about following the “diet” exactly day to day - that it’s about adjusting my lifestyle to what is right for me emotionally and healthwise. I started the program on a good note - day 3 was tough for me and I was frustrated but it was the first time I didn’t give in to “I’ve blown it - I’ll just eat what I want”. Somewhere in my mind - I am learning about portion control - I think one of the things that lead me to research this site and others was that I didn’t FEEL good when I ate so much food. I know it was emotional eating but not really at the time - I’m finding that I am content and Happier eating smaller portions - that I don’t feel full and tired and aggravated after I eat and when I tell myself I can have a shake, bar or whatever in the not so distant future - I feel o.k. I look forward to the one meal I plan myself and sometimes it’s not as perfect as it should be but I’m o.k. with that. If I don’t lose the weight as fast I’m o.k. with the fact that I’m making small changes - getting use to those changes and being o.k. with them and still enjoying my life and not going overboard. It may take me a bit longer to lose the weight but I didn’t gain it overnight so I’m o.k. with not losing it overnight either. I hope you don’t give up in your journey because you are doing the whole mom, work, LIFE day that so many of us are doing and I think if we just keep trying each day and not expecting huge miracles but small ones’s we’ll be o.k. Don’t give up Genie - live your life, do the best you can each day but be happy with each day as well. Thanks for sharing your story with us - Kristina

Congrats on your success! The last ten pounds are really difficult.I have been struggling for awhile to shed those last few digits from the scale.I have days were I am just determined to reach my goals and days when I just feel wonderful about were I am and how good I feel about myself:)
It’s so funny how numbers effect us rather it’s age or weight.I think if your goal is that size 8 instead of that size 6 you should feel great about it.Go for it!Just keep up the good work and enjoy what you have done,go buy something fabulous to wear!I am sure you feel a bit of pressure with being the spokesperson but just forget all of that and concentrate on yourself and the goal you really want to do with the program.
You already look amazing so do what is best for your health and your happiness:)Just keep going! It will turn out the way you want it

I just ordered my medifast 4 wk supply of food and am waiting for it to arrive. I have 70lbs to lose and have to admit that it scares me. I have yo-yo’d my weight my entire life. I realize it is not what I am eating, but rather, what is eating me.

So I realize I have to do some real serious soul searching to find out what it is that makes me reach for food to find comfort.

At the age of 46, can I do this? Yicks!

26 | Carrie said:

I am half-way to my goal and down to a 6 but 5 feet tall. It is so hard with looking and feeling good and everyone complementing. My Health Coach suggested I get something to re-inspire me. I bought a really neat pair of size 2 jeans, that I can actually put on. I may not be able to move very well but I was surprised they would even get on (and suck in I can button). So my new goal is to be comfortable in them.
Taking it a day/meal at a time is great. This is only for a short time really in all. It is harder to start over again later and you don’t want to regret it. Would it hang over your head? Always wondering if I would of stuck it out. What others think (and what is accepted now-a-days) is really normally unhealthy. You aim big.

You look great! I’ve been a GH fan since I was a little girl - my mom got me started on it. You and Tony Geary have always been my favorites! I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with Lupus and Fibromyalgia, and the meds the dr. put me on packed on 30 lbs to my 5′2″ frame. I’ve lost about half, and it is so hard. I have a problem with sleep-eating. So it’s hard for me to always control what goes into my mouth.
Keep up the great work. You look just like you did when you were a teenager!

Hi Genie!
You seem to just be doing great! The last 10 lbs are the hardest–without a doubt! I have watched your weight fluctuations over the years (pregnancies, etc..) and I can completely relate. I tend to carry my weight and fluctuate alot like you do. Fortunately and unfortunately, you can gain weight and still look really good just by the way you dress and carry your weight. Of course, all my weight was “Actual” not added by the camera!!
Here is my journey: I started MF 2/27/07 at 5′7″,196 lbs. and went down to 145 by 6/27/07. I lost my last 10 lbs in May-June, 2007. (Definitely the hardest 10 lbs.)
Then, I went off the plan “cold turkey” for three months. I have gained back about 10 lbs. Now that all my kids (5)are back in school, I want to lose those last 10 lbs-again! When losing the last 10 lbs earlier this year, I found that I would plateau for about a week. Then all of the sudden I would start dropping daily in 1-2 lbs increments over the next week for a total of 5 lbs/every other week. I also had to start adding some extra “Roller Blading” (15 minutes/3x’s per week)to my usual walking routine in order to expedite my weight loss.
MF is just a great program!! I have found it easy to follow and I do like most of the food. The best part, I never get hungry when I follow the program. When I get to my goal weight this time, which I have dropped to 135, I am going to stay on the MF Transition program for the entire time. Hopefully, this will help me keep the weight off! You hear of such great success stories on the website! I am going to follow this
advise from the veterans at MF this time. I hope this helps!
Good luck and keep us informed of your progress!
P.S. Don’t fret over the “slips”–just start back on the program the next morning and forget about the slip! We all do this from time to time!

Hi, this is my first time reading all of the great comments on this site. I just turned 37 on 9/13 and on this day I hit the 40 lb mark! I just started Medifast June 4th and this plan has been a life saver! The complements I get are unbelievable. My goal is for my actual weight to match my weight that is on my license. So I have about 27 more pounds to go. Great job everyone!

Genie,

Like Vicki’s friend, I, too, had gastric bypass 14 months ago. I have lost 116lbs in this time and still would like to lose another 10-12lb to reach my goal (I am 5′1″). It seems like I will never lose these last few pounds. One day I’m up a lb next day down 2. Yo-yo. My father says stay with it and continue to strive for my goal while my husband, children and even my 11 year old granddaughter say not to that I look great as is. You are a beautifuly person Genie. I have followed you through your days on GH as a teenager and I think God has truly blessed you. Like others have written, you beauty comes from within and radiates outward. Medifast is great at helping you to lose the weight. I had also been on it many years ago. It’s great to know there are even more choices in your food selections. Stay positive and associate with positive thinkers and you will lose the last 10. Never give up on your dreams or goals.

I know what you mean about the last 10 pounds. After I gave birth to my first child I had to find a way to lose the 40lbs I gained during the pregnancy. Hi Genie,
I think sizes have changed so much! I used to be a size 6-8 and without losing weight I seem to be a size 4. It’s the clothes that have changed, not me. So I would go for the size 6 knowing that it is realisticaly more like a size 8 used to be. Your a GORGEOUS woman at any size though and also an incredible actress. Your size is so unimportant to anyone who appreciates your gifts as an actress.

Dear Genie,

The last 10 are so hard…I have had some slips. I guess I start to feel like I have it under control and I allow myself something “taboo”. It’s a slippery slope for me though. Once I have one thing, I’ll then have “just one more”. Then, something comes over me and I just keep grabbing something again and again. Ugh! The wierdest thing is, I think the Medifast chocolate pudding set me off. It tasted so good, I had 3 in a matter of two hours. I’m such a chocoholic…it’s my downfall. Anyway, today I’m back on track. I just have to remind myself how good it feels to fit into my clothes again. And, I’m not going to dwell yesterdays calorie intake…Nobody’s perfect, right?

Hi Genie,

Just goes to show us, we are all human with the same struggles and fears, yes, there I said it fears. The last 10 is like the first 10 and the middle 10. These places we hit and have to adjust. Just wanted to say I think you’re fantastic - I tried to post something recently, but never saw it so am trying again. My grandmother, Lenore Kingston, was an ORIGINAL CAST MEMBER OF GH, (Mrs. Weeks). Hi Genie,
I have a suggestion. I lost 35lbs a couple of years ago. Each dress size I lost, I went out and bought a new wardrobe. Well I went from at 12 to a 0-2, so you can imagine how many “new wardrobes” I bought. A lot of wasted money. Many of the clothes still have the tags. I would only buy like 2 pants (black and jeans) at each stage and not a whole wardrobe. Wait until you get to the point where you are pefectly happy with your weight and don’t plan to lose more, and keep it off for a month or 2 before buying the full wardrobe. You’ll save a lot. Plus, if you buy a new wardrobe at your lowest weight and then gain some back, you won’t be able to wear the wardrobe. That’s why I say wait a couple of months.

Hi Genie,

I am also a woman in my 40’s, and trying to lose that last 10 pounds (to get down to my healthier size 10). I think that Hollywood ideals are way to unmanageable for women. A size 6 is tiny and very difficult to maintain. I was a size 6 at my wedding and I don’t think I will ever be that thin again in my lifetime.

I think you are beautiful, inside and out, and have been a loyal General Hospital fan because of you! Focus on your health, not what size you are.
